Why synbiotics?
Probiotics bring many health benefits when taken in sufficient doses - that is, in sufficient quantities. However, the best effect is achieved when probiotics are combined with prebiotics. This results in a synbiotic (lat. syn = together, together). As the word suggests, a synbiotic has a significantly better effect on our intestines than a probiotic or prebiotic alone. You can imagine it like this: The "good" bacteria in our gut are supported by the probiotics. But for them to work hard and support our gut, they need energy. And that's exactly what they get from the prebiotics. These substances are basically the food for the probiotics. When you take a synbiotic, you create the perfect conditions for the many little helpers in your gut.
Mode of action of Dietbacs:
Dietbacs act by interfering with cholesterol metabolism in different ways. Three mechanisms of action are predominant:
1) Increased direct excretion of cholesterol: The bacterial strain Lactobacillus plantarum CUL66 binds or metabolises cholesterol in the intestinal lumen, which is subsequently excreted in the stool.
2) Increased excretion of cholesterol through enzymatic deconjugation (detailed view in picture 2): The bacterial composition of Dietbacs also acts by deconjugating (modifying) bile acids (1), as a result of which they are not (re)absorbed and are increasingly excreted in the stool (2). This leads to a reduction in the amount of bile acids absorbed into the blood (3) and sends a signal to the liver that synthesis in the liver must reflexively increase to maintain physiological levels (4). This is done by breaking down the body's cholesterol stores (cholisterol esters), which in turn lowers the cholesterol in the body.
3) Reduction of cholesterol transport through the intestinal epithelium: In order for the body to absorb cholesterol (e.g. from food) from the intestine into the body, it must first enter the cells of the intestinal wall and then into underlying tissue and the bloodstream. These processes are made possible by cholesterol transporters. Dietbacs reduce the incorporation of these cholesterol transporters both on the "inside" of the intestinal wall (reduced incorporation of the transporter NCP1L1) and on the "outside" (reduced incorporation of the transporter ABCA-1), resulting in less cholesterol being absorbed into the body. There is no change in the intracellular cholesterol efflux back into the intestinal lumen, so cholesterol excretion is NOT affected (3c).
